Newsweek out of the closet for gay marriage

Apparently feeling the heat from gay marriage proponents, Newsweek has weighed in on the recent decision by California’s citizens (Proposition 8) to amend its Constitution, defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Its passage was a decisive move to prohibit gay marriage. The cover story for the December 6, 2008 issue, “Our Mutual Joy“, written by Lisa Miller, sets out to prove that the Bible, properly read and interpreted, really supports love and marriage among gays.

Albert Mohler Jr., 9th President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, KY), has responded to the article. Turning the Bible on its Head – Newsweek Goes for Gay Marriage“ is a balanced, biblically-astute answer to Miller’s revisionist reading of the biblical material. Indeed, he helpfully shows that, not only has Miller failed to adequately read the biblical text itself, but she has camped out with a handful of ”progressive scholars” living on the fringes of anything close to a faithful hermeneutic.

I recommend reading both Miller and Mohler. This promises to remain a touchstone issue for the forseeable future.
