“The problem with you Christians….”

In 2002 I assumed leadership of New Covenant Forum where I served until the Fall of 2009. New Covenant Forum is Canada’s oldest continuing outreach to the Jewish community. Last Fall (October, 2009) I returned to pastoral ministry at Grace Baptist Church.

During those years of Jewish outreach in Toronto, I discovered how many religious holidays are observed in modern Judaism. One Fall, just prior to the Days of Awe (the ten day period from Rosh Hashannah to Yom Kippur), I was discussing the gospel with an Orthodox Jewish man. In our conversation, he made an interesting observation:

“The problem with you Christians is that you don’t have enough holidays!”

I was reminded of my Jewish friend’s comment when reading over at the Internet Monk site today. Chaplain Mike is advocating the addition of Pentecost to the three main evangelical Christian celebrations: Christmas, Good Friday and Easter.

How Do You Celebrate Pentecost? is a thought-provoking article – one that is worth reading and reflecting upon.
